About Jan Svankmajer

The Czech director and animation artist who was born in 1934 is considered a Frank Kafka in cinema field for his unique surrealistic style. His use of stop-motion and clay motion to create dreadful yet funny surrealistic atmosphere in the movies has gained him popularity over the decades. His works have the power to bring shocks and pessimism to the audience.

Today, he is one of the most influential animation artists in the world. His feature films, with his masterful use of animation techniques including Alice, Faust, Little Otik etc, are also well-known. This proves his high achievement in both animation and motion picture. Cinema Space honorably presents the genius artist whose name is quite new to Vietnamese audience.

 

About Lunacy (2005)

Based on 2 short stories of Edgar Poe and the life of Marquis de Sade, Lunacy discusses the contradiction between freedom and unreasonable constraint of social standards through a story of a psychiatric hospital. The movie can be viewed as the firmest philosophy declaration of complicated artist Jan Svankmajer. Full of philosophy and stamp of Svankmajer’s unique style, Lunacy show the greatness of this Czech film maker.
