About Tsai Ming Liang

Born in Malaysia, Tsai Ming Lang grew up there and did not move to Taiwan until he was at the age of 20 to start his career. Up until now, he has received many prestigious award from many international film festivals, including the Golden Lion Award for Vive L'Amour at Venice Film Festival in 1994, the Silver Bear Award for The River at Berlin Film Festival in 1997 , the Press Award for The Hole in Cannes Film Festival in 1998, etc.

Tsai Ming Liang, together with Hou Hsiao Hsien and Edward Yang , is considered the most outstanding film director in the "New Wave" of Taiwan cinema. Like Hou and Yang's, Tsai's movies draw a full picture of the modern society through the eyes of people at the working class.  Among the three, Tsai is the youngest, also whose movies are most avant-garde.

Each of his movie is an interesting experiment of  new film making technique, a great combination of movie and theater, reality and fiction. His using the same main character (played by only one actor) for all of his movies is another proof of his avant-garde. Undoubtedly, Tsai Ming Liang is one of "the" filmmakers.
