About Adrift (2009)
Director: Bui Thac Chuyen Cast: Do Thi Hai Yen, Duy Khoa, Pham Linh Dan, Johnny Tri Nguyen Genre: Drama Runtime: 110 mins Plot: Duyen is getting married. She thinks she loves her fiance, who is
two years younger. But what does that actually mean? The tempestuous wedding
ends without romance. The naive bridegroom turns out to be a mother's boy. He
is carried into the bedroom blind drunk and is later incapable of consummating
the marriage. Through a jealous girlfriend, Duyen finds herself in the circles
of a charming man of the world who has no respect for faithfulness or morality
and who awakens confusing feelings in her. The inexperienced husband has
meanwhile crossed the path of a teenage girl who fled her father. Award:
- FIPRESCI Prize Award – Venice Film Festival
- Three nomination of Asia film award for best
scrift writer, Best Director of photographie, Best Composer.
- Gold Kite for Best Cinematography – Vietnam Cinema Association
- Golden Kite Award for Best Supporting Actress – Vietnam Cinema Association
• “…a subtle, melancholy exploration of erotic angst and uncomfortable
awakening. “Adrift” evokes a culture whose puritanical restraints have begun to
loosen, allowing dangerous sparks to fly. Once desire has been unleashed,
smugly settling for less is no longer a comfortable option.” (Stephen Holden-
The New York Times)
• “Director Bui Thac Chuyen skilfully uses languid takes to highlight the
emptiness and solitude of the characters, while slowly expanding the story to
encompass a whole cast of fascinating personalities. Even more remarkable are
the moments of sheer eroticism – all subtly executed with nary a glimpse of
flesh.” (Raymond Phathanavirangoon – Toronto
international film festival)
• “…an elegant, sophisticated home-grown movie to compare with the best in
current East-Asian cinema. Adrift is rooted in precise and beautiful social
observation, but it explores an emotional-sexual conundrum as cruel and
convoluted as anything in Les Liaisons Dangereuses…” (Tony Rayns – London Int. Film festival)
• “Living in Fear” vividly portrays the wounds left by the Vietnam War, wounds
salted by social pressure and anxiety. The director handled this unique subject
matter with maximum impact through powerful cinematic elements.” (Gertjan
Zuilhof – Rotterdam Int. Film Festival)
• Deliberate direction and solid performances from an unassuming cast give the
picture a measured feel (Critic’s Notebook)
